As a regional SAHARA office, the East & Central Africa office is responsible for building the SAHARA network in the region, and undertaking research, particularly multi-country research. The staff of the regional office includes a regional co-ordinator, four full-time and four part-time staff members. The regional office is hosted at the Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development in Africa (TICH) in Kisumu, Kenya. TICH is a voluntary agency registered as an international community based health, development, research and training institution, inaugurated in May 1998. TICH courses are oriented towards community-based approaches to health and development. The courses have an institutional resource base and support, but much of the learning takes place within partner communities and agencies, focusing on their priorities, problems, needs and capacities. Students become closely involved in community projects, thus receiving on-the-job training. TICH is located at the Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK). GLUK was formed in 2006. It is the first private university in Kenya to be predominantly science oriented and its first two degree courses are Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Community Health and Development. GLUK has a heavy emphasis on research, especially on approaches to sustainable improvement in health and development. For more see www.tichafrica.org.
