SAHARA seeks to expand its network through the appointment of National Focal Points, who are usually attached to a research or academic institution in their country. These people serve as the first point of contact for SAHARA in the country and help to coordinate SAHARA's work in that country.
The role of SAHARA’s Focal Points is to:
- Influence research priority setting on the social aspects of HIV and AIDS, through for instance promoting dialogue around policy and influencing agenda-setting in national processes.
- Build and support individual researchers and a research community, through for instance assisting in identifying candidates for post-graduate training in social science research.
- Foster an alliance on the social aspects of HIV/AIDS, through active recruitment of new network members and mobilising support from the SAHARA network.
- Organise and facilitate policy and multi-stakeholder dialogues in the country.
- Promote research on the social aspects of HIV/AIDS.
- Develop a database of who does what and where in the country regarding research into the social aspects of HIV/AIDS.
