Welcome to AfroAIDSinfoTM

A web-based information portal developed by the South African Medical Research Council. It provides up-to-date, scientifically accurate information on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) with a specific focus on the southern African region.

The portal is divided into five sections, to cater for five consumer groups:

Sciencegives the latest scientific research and statistics and is aimed at researchers and scientists
Health professionprovides information on prevention, treatment and care, including a focus on women; as well as matters affecting the health care professions
Policyincludes information on government responses
Educationprovides resources for educators and learners
Publicincludes general information on HIV and AIDS and community intiatives

Registration

The free registration enables consumers to access the majority of information on the portal.  The needs of our consumer groups are important to us and therefore a two-way communication is maintained through monthly e-Newsletters and regular Consumer Health Informatics surveys.

Our funders and collaborators

Initial funding was provided by the International AIDS Society (IAS); Bristol-Myers Squibb HIV/AIDS Research Institute "Secure the Future"; and the South African Medical Research Council. Individual projects are now funded through collaborations with the Protea Education Development Project that includes IrishAID and the Human Dignity Foundation as well as our collaboration with the Sexual Violence Research Initiative.
