This conference was held in Dakar, Senegal, from 10 - 14 October 2005 with the theme "Bridging the gap between policy, research and interventions". It was attended by over 600 people from 30 countries. About 750 abstracts were received and out of them 234 were selected for presentations.

Most notable at the conference was the participation of communities from marginalised sectors who are often at the centre of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This made the Exchange Encounters a forum for vigorous debate and provided a voice and space for the participation of all stakeholders.
