Olayide Akanni

Olayide Akanni Olayide is the Executive Director of Journalists Against AIDS (JAAIDS), a Nigeria-based non-governmental organisation that plays a lead role in public information, behaviour change communication, capacity building and media, policy and advocacy on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. She also coordinates the work of the African Civil Society Coalition on HIV/AIDS.  She is a journalist (former health correspondent) and advocate for HIV and TB treatment access and civil society engagement in health.  

With support from the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition, she has assessed HIV/AIDS treatment preparedness in Nigeria, and overseen projects sponsored by the Ford Foundation and others on monitoring HIV/AIDS efforts and fostering accountability and transparency. She was a lead researcher for the Open Society Institute's Public Health Watch TB Project Assessment of TB control and civil society engagement in Nigeria.

She holds a Masters degree in Biochemistry, and has broad experience in project management and materials development, facilitation, HIV/AIDS and TB training and behavior change communication, policy development and research. In 2007 she was appointed as a member of the World Health Organization’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Tuberculosis (WHO STAG-TB).
