Chairperson Message

The Social Aspects of HIV and AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA), established in 2001 by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), is an alliance of partners established to conduct, support and use social sciences research to prevent the further spread of HIV and mitigate the impact of its devastation in sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is to conduct HIV/AIDS multi-country studies that generate evidence for policy-making and programme development; to build individual and organisational research capacities and to effectively disseminate research findings, through its biennial SAHARA conference, its internationally-accredited journal SAHARA Journal (SAHARA-J) and its network of researchers, policy makers and practitioners.

“Since 2002, SAHARA has convened biennial conferences which provide an inter-disciplinary space and a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue in the African continent. The theme of SAHARA Conference is “Translating evidence into action: Connecting with communities, policies, human rights, gender, service delivery”. The 7th SAHARA Conference 2013 (SAHARA 7) is not a standard scientific conference, and will be like no other. It is the largest conference of its kind: going beyond knowledge sharing through focusing on practical methods on bridging the gap between cutting edge evidence and action."

“Some progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The number of new infections has decreased, while access to antiretroviral treatment has increased. Nonetheless, there are more newly infected people than there are people who gain access to antiretroviral treatment. Furthermore, women and key populations in Africa benefitted much less than the general population from the progress made. SAHARA 7 will contribute towards closing the gap between the state of HIV/AIDS today and the goals of the UNAIDS’ “Getting to Zero” strategy.”
